Double Decker Train :Indian Railways may run double decker trains to Madurai
Chennai/Madurai: Southern Railway is planning to introduce double decker trains from Chennai to Madurai and Trichy as demand is growing for trains with higher passenger capacity on these routes.
The railway budget also mentions that the ministry is going ahead to expand the presence of double decker trains across the country. Preliminary work, including studies to find out if tracks and stations are ready for these trains with taller and wider coaches, is being conducted.
Madurai division has presented a favourable report to operate double decker trains in the division. Madurai divisional railway manager Sunil Kumar Garg said, “There are no constraints to operate a train that comes with extra dimensions.”
An ‘Over Dimensional Consignment’ (consignment or rake that is bigger than the standard size used) check was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of running these trains.
The studies showed that there are no constraints on the route between Madurai and Trichy.
The zone has expertise in making essential modifications to the platforms, tracks and overhead power cables because a double decker train is running between Chennai and Bengaluru.
Sources said that the zone was going ahead with plans for double decker trains because the railway ministry wants to promote them as a showpiece. There are seven double decker trains in the country.
An official said, “The ministry has announced the plan. There are no new coaches to run more trains. There is a possibility that the coaches may be manufactured by private companies because the new trains are meant to cater to business travellers.
The rakes made at Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala are not up to the mark when it comes to passenger comfort.”
